Breakout 7

Spotlight - Leading with ICT as a change agent (Niki Davis)
- We are change agents in a global arena
- We work in interconnected ecosystems
- We (teachers) are the keystone species

1. An ecosystem occurs anywhere there is interaction between organisms and their environment (e.g. classroom)
2. Individuals select behaviour to fit the ecosystem
3. Ecosystems interlink
4. Ecozone is a group of similar ecosystems
5. Keystone species in education is the teacher.

..........................................
Sorry, had to give up on this one as the net access was so awful! :(

Breakout 6

Developing community capacity through the use of ICT
Dimboola Memorial Secondary College
- Rural serving, small student popn. (205)
- Motto = Facta non verba (Deeds not words)
- Think... What is the community?
- Silverton Primary - offer radio and TV programmes to local community (45min radio broadcast in morning - notices, interviews etc; 3km radius)
- Netbooks: students pay $200/yr for 3 years, then $1 at end to complete purchase of unit)
- seeing opportunities and seeing the potential of those opportunities
- students developing websites for local small businesses
- VCAL Inc: non-academic students work on 5 areas/projects which they have developed themselves (building & construction, car restoration, catering, community gardens, community gymnasium) - developed full business plans, applied for funding (from the 'bank mgr' principal), sold their services/products to the local/wider community.
Student presented results/learning outcomes at the parent information evening - normal attendance was ~55%. When students presented, attendance was 98%. Outcomes related to VCAL qualification (VCAA)
School has run an ICT conference in the school during school time ('living school')
School data has improved significantly (satisfaction surveys, attendance data, suspensions etc)
Best way to gain suport is to give it!
